William Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) was an English Romantic painter known for his dramatic landscapes and maritime scenes. A master of light and colour, he revolutionised landscape painting with works like The Fighting Temeraire and Rain, Steam and Speed.

A member of the Royal Academy, he left much of his work to the British nation.

In 1826, he made a long journey across France, sailing up the Loire from Nantes to Orléans, sketchbooks and watercolours in hand. Turner produced representations of more than 40 towns and places that he had visited, and painted some magnificent oil paintings that were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1927.
